Historical NoteReturn to Top

Since its founding in 1898, the Oregon Historical Society has collected ephemera of all kinds, most of it documenting the history of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. In the mid-20th century, librarians at the Society began organizing these materials into what became known as "Topical Collections." One such collection, the Education Collection, collated various items related to schools, students, teachers, and educational associations.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Collection created by the Oregon Historical Society and documenting education primarily in Oregon, with emphasis on Portland. Includes programs, scrapbooks, flyers, newsletters, student class work, curriculum, representative textbooks, reports, reminiscences, and other ephemera. Subjects include: colleges, universities, primary and secondary schools, teachers, and educational organizations. Most of the materials are printed, however there are also many original manuscript materials, including school assignments and records of organizations, such as the minutes of the Parent Teacher Association of Portland's Failing School, 1944-1950.

Among the original manuscript materials are class assignments by Oscar Beck, a student at the University of Oregon in the early 20th century. Also included are a number of school registers, with lists of students and grades, most notably from Portland Public Schools in the early 20th century. Scrapbooks from students at the University of Oregon and Portland's Washington High School in the 1900s and 1910s include photographs, dance cards, invitations, and diverse ephemera.
