Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Nathan Krems was born April 10, 1915 to parents Sarah and Solomon in Seattle, Washington. He was the oldest of 7 children, with 5 brothers and one sister.

Solomon Krems, Nathan's father, was a Polish immigrant and the publisher of the first Jewish newspaper in Seattle, the Jewish Voice. Solomon Krems learned the printing trade, as he migrated through Europe, Canada, and the United States. This was his business while he published the newspaper. Nathan also worked on the Jewish Transcript, which he edited when he was a college student in the 1930s. Nathan attended the University of Washington and earned a degree in journalism.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by K. Winn, July 12, 1973.

Mr. Krems describes his father's emigration from Poland, the "Jewish Voice" (the first Jewish newspaper in Seattle), and his work on the "Jewish Transcript", which he edited while a college student in the late 1930s.
