Historical NoteReturn to Top
Beginning in the mid-20th century, it became more common for individuals to have access to video and audio recording devices. Insitutions and individuals within Whitman College began to record significant events involving campus life at the college. The earliest recording contained in the Whitman College Media Collection is a privately-made video of the 1931 flood which was considered the worst-ever in Walla Walla area. In later years, the College began to systematically record events such as Commencement, Baccalaureate, athletic events, musical and theatrical performances, and the installation ceremonies for new Presidents.

The Whitman College Media Collection contains video and audio recordings of events including commencement and baccalaureate; professorial lectures, athetic events, visiting lecturers, musical and theatrical performances, and interviews with alumni and staff. Various media formats include 16mm film, 8mm film, video cassette, audio cassette, and reel-to-reel audio. Some of the material has been copied into more contemporary formats.
