The guqin (also called qin) is a seven-string zither instrument from China. The guqin is made to be plucked and covers about four octaves in total. It is thought to have originated around the first millennium BCE and is sometimes referred to as "the father of Chinese music". Although the seven-string version is standard today, ancient guqins have been found with anywhere from 5 to 10 strings.
