Casserd discusses her grandfather, Rabbi Hirsch Genss. He arrived in Seattle in 1899, the year orthodox Jews joined to form the Chevra Bikur Cholim and it is possible that he came for that reason. He had rabbinical ordination from Europe and could do circumcisions and shecht animals and perform other rabbinical functions. Freda tells how he executed these functions. She was constantly in her grandfather's home as a child and gives a personal account of the continuous warmhearted hospitality there. Rabbi Genss was the unofficial orthodox rabbi until Rabbi Gedalish Halpern was officially elected to the pulpit of Congregation Bikur Cholim in 1905. Freda also tells how Rabbi Genss helped Jews in their difficulties with the law.
