Judge Andrew Jackson "A.J." Gillis was born in 1858. He had a career as a railroad construction engineer, a prosecuting attorney, justice of the peace and police court judge, and served as mayor of Walla Walla, Washington.

The Andrew J. Gillis Papers, which dates from 1901 to 1947, consists of writings, Inquiry Club papers, correspondence, a newspaper clipping announcing his retirement, his 1901 application of admission to the Oregon Bar, genealogical information, and articles submitted for publication. A letter, from Hazard Stevens, provides information about the events surrounding the hanging of the Nisqually Indian, Leschi.
