Historical NoteReturn to Top

George Paugh and his brother, Theodore operated a ranch in partnership approximately 1930s to 1965. This partnership ended with George's death on June 5, 1965. The ranch was located in Madison County, near Jack Creek and later near McAllister and on Dead Man Creek. Operations include sheep at first, then cattle later. Minnie E. Paugh, donor of the papers, is the daughter of George and June Paugh.

The collection is arranged into three series, diaries, financial, and legal documents. The materials within the series are arranged by topic then chronological within the topic. Oversize materials have been removed to separate storage. The collection materials are associated with the ranch operation of George and Theodore Paugh, and various members of the Paugh family. Series 1:  Diaries, 1940-1965Return to Top

Diaries of George Paugh contain general weather information and daily ranch activities. Glued in newspaper clippings on various topics are scattered throughout the diaries. Laid in materials from the diaries are in Box 2, Folder 9. In the 1965 diary entries are made by George or his daughter, Minnie Paugh. Also, a portion of her 1963 diary is included in Box 2, Folder 8. An entry in the 1959 diary is about the major earthquake at Hebgen Lake and Dam.

Ledgers, bills, receipts, county, state and federal tax returns, bank accounts, and other miscellaneous materials related to the ranch operation of George and Theodore Paugh. Materials in various folders are incomplete records. Items of interest include bills of sale cover sheep, wool, and cattle; official breed pedigrees are in Box 7, Folder 6; grazing leases are in Box 7, Folder 4; and rations books from World War II are in Box 7, Folder 5.
