Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Gervais Reed attended Yale College and the University of Pennsylvania where he pursued graduate studies in art history. From 1952 to 1968 Reed was Curator and later director of the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. He served as Professor of Art and Art History from 1968 until his retirement from the University in 1997. Reed had a special interest in regional art of the Pacific Northwest, writing a biography of Walter Isaacs and articles on George Tsutakawa. He also prepared a series of walking tours of art in Seattle’s public places. Reed was nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award at the UW in 1971. He served as president and trustee of the Washington Arts and Crafts Association from 1957 to 1959.
