Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Established by treaty in 1855, the Yakama (formerly "Yakima") Reservation is located on 1,130,000 acres in southwestern Washington State and is home to approximately 6,500 members of the Yakama Indian Nation. In 1912, W.F. Turner became the pastor of the First Christian Church in Yakima, Washington. Turner advocated for an Indian mission center to serve the Yakamas. Community leaders in Yakima such as Lucullus Virgil McWhorter who had written two books on the plight of the Yakama were attracted to this idea as were a number of leading figures among the Yakamas such as Buffalo Ben Olney, a rancher on the reservation and one of a group of Yakama who created the first Indian commercial club in the United States. When the Yakima Indian Christian Mission was launched in 1921, people in Yakima raised $3,500 in one day and the Indians pledged $2,000 which enabled work to begin on the mission.
