In 1901 John B. Long and his brother Fred I. Long formed the Long Brothers Company in Great Falls, Montana. The company was a farming and ranching company in northern Montana that raised sheep. J.B. Long also had predecessor companies in similar businesses: J.B. Long & Company and the Long & Jamieson Brothers Live Stock Company (formed 1897 with Gordon R. Jamieson). The company was dissolved in 1912, and Fred carried on the business under the name of F.I. Long and Company.

The collection contains financial and legal materials and correspondence from Long Brothers and its predecessor and successor companies. Most materials concern land leases, purchases, and exchanges; sheep acquired and sold, and other ranching concerns.

Custodial History

Wallace Clark purchased the records in a Great Falls, Montana, second-hand store with funds provided by the Friends of the Library.

Gift of Wallace Clark, 1967.

Processing Note

The original processors arranged the collection and prepared a detailed name index; the collection was numbered LC 4. In 2004, the collection was re-numbered Mss 004 and a new finding aid was produced and encoded.
