Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Scott Milne Matheson was born on 8 January 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, to Scott Milne and Adele Adams Matheson. His family moved to Utah, settling in Parowan and then Salt Lake City. Matheson earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1950, then received a law degree from Stanford University in 1952. He practiced law in Iron County and then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad starting in 1958. He served as governor of Utah from 1976 to 1985. Matheson died on 7 October 1990 from cancer.
