Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Greta McIntyre Sheeley was a 1920 graduate of Pacific University. Her hometown was Athena, Oregon. She attended during a turbulent time for the college. While she was at Pacific, America entered World War I and nearly all the male students enlisted in the military. In her last year, Prohibition began; and just after her graduation, women gained the right to vote. On campus, "Boxer," Pacific's mascot, was stolen and recovered multiple times between various student groups, and other campus traditions such as May Day and theatre productions were celebrated. Sheeley collected hundreds of photographs of her time at Pacific and preserved one of the most complete pictures of life on campus in the World War I era.

Highlights of the photographs include male students in their World War I military uniforms; the "Boxer" mascot statue being held by various students; theatre productions; May Day celebrations; the annual campus clean-up day; picnics; and the Pacific University campus. Four issues of the yearbook are also included, with many annotations by Sheeley indicating the names of people in group photographs and other information that is not available elsewhere. There are also a number of loose items such as correspondence and reunion photographs, and correspondence from the donor with additional reminiscenses about attending Pacific University.
