Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Jay Gregory Dash--known as Greg or J. G.--was a professor of physics at the University of Washington. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 28, 1923 to parents Emanuel and Shirley Dash. After graduating from the City College of New York, Dash earned his Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University. He then served in the Navy during World War II, training as a radar technician in the Pacific. After the war, he worked at Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico until 1960, when he joined the faculty at the University of Washington in the department of physics. He remained at the University of Washington until his retirement. Dash died on November 28, 2010.

Scope and Content: Papers from J.G. Dash's involvement with arms control and conflict studies, as well as from his work on ground freezing technology for the control and remediation of hazardous chemical and radioactive wastes.
Materials include papers, slides, and sound tape reels related to Dash's work with arms control and conflict studies, particularly at the University of Washington. Of note are papers on the activities of the Graduate School Committee on Conflict Studies (which held weekly seminars and sponsored undergraduate courses, primarily focused on anti-ballistic missile defense and the causes of large-scale international conflict), files for courses about nuclear war, writings by Dash, Physicians for Social Responsibility programs, Star Wars clippings, space station proposals, files of speeches presented to local organizations, Strategic Defense Initiative files, and Union of Concerned Scientists papers and correspondence.
Also included are files from Dash's work with University of Washington Research and Development on ground freezing technology for the control and remediation of hazardous chemical and radioactive wastes. In 1990, UW research led to a proposal to apply ground freezing technology to immobilize leaking underground wastes. A brief newspaper report attracted the attention of RKK, Ltd., a small private technology development company that held a patent for such an application. A meeting in the UW Office of Technology Transfer led to a contract for UW, granting RKK exclusive privilege to a license for current and future inventions on relevant technology, and a "Know-How" contract for Professor J.G. Dash. Papers related to this work include RKK Technology Advisory Board membership materials and correspondence, patent applications for several inventions to immobilize and remediate underground hazardous and radioactive waste (all patents have been allowed to lapse), conference reports and reprints, and materials on Hanford waste tanks and oil files in Kuwait.

Studies
Scope and Content: The Graduate School Committee on Conflict Studies operated from
about 1967-1984. Activities consisted of weekly interdisciplinary seminars by
both faculty members and visitors. It also sponsored undergraduate courses and
interdisciplinary undergraduate students. The principal concerns were the
causes of large-scale international conflict. An outgrowth of the seminar was a
small focus group on anti-ballistic missile defense. This group stimulated a
widely-supported civic movement protesting the use of Fort Lawton as an
anti-missile base. The protest was successful, and resulted in the Fort being
released by the Department of Defense to become Seattle's Discovery Park.
