Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ronald P. Phillips (1906-2004) was the prinicipal clarinetist with the Seattle Symphony from 1933-1983. He began playing clarinet from the age of four and by age 16 he played professionally with the Seattle Civic Symphony. Phillips joined the Seattle Symphony in 1927, and soon after married the pianist Gladys Bezeau Phillips. Together, they were heavily involved with the Seattle Symphony, the Ladies Musical Club, and the Seattle Art Museum Chamber Music Series. Ronald Phillips was also a seasoned instructor, who taught at the University of Washington School of Music for 30 years, as well as teaching famed clarinetists such as Loren Kitt. Highlights of his career included performing the opening solo of "Rhapsody in Blue" with George Gershwin, touring the Far East with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, studying in Paris with Daniel Bonade, and performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting.

Scope and Content: Programs, correspondence, clippings, ephemera, photographs, scrapbooks; 1863-2004. These papers document the musical careers of Phillips and his wife, Gladys Bezeau Phillips, including their various involvement with local cultural organizations, especially the Seattle Symphony. The materials primarily consist of biographical information, books, clippings, correspondence, musical scores, newsletters, notes, pamphlets, periodicals, photographs and photographic material, ephemera, scrapbooks, souvenir books, and yearbooks/directories. A significant portion of the papers are made up of programs, which document the majority of the Seattle Symphony's performances during Phillips' career, as well as other musical groups that Phillips performed with or took an interest in. Some programs are autographed by guest artists, including Yo Yo Ma, Merv Griffin, Maxim Shostakovich, and Yehudi Menuhin. Notable correspondents include Glenn Leach, Whitney Tustin, Anne Gould Hauberg, Basil Cameron, Daniel Bonade, and Milton Katims.
