Biographical NoteReturn to Top

In the 1930s, Colin McPhee lived in Bali where he studied the sacred gamelan tradition and other musical genres. When he worked in New York during the 1940s, he was among the talented, young generation of composers that included Aaron Copeland and Henry Cowell. In California, where he died in 1964, he contributed greatly to the study of world music. McPhee was a faculty member of the Music Department at UCLA from 1960-1964. Besides his musical talents, he was an excellent photographer (as seen in the Archive's collection). His publications include A Club of Small Men (1948), A House in Bali (1947), and Music of Bali (1956).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

These 5 tapes were assembled into a collection after years of confusion; the collection number was assigned when only 1 of the reels was present in the Archives (1988); the remaining reels were part of a shipment of tapes received from Robert Garfias in 1999. The tapes were numbered as follows: 61-1.1 OT - 61-1.5 OT (non-existent numbers in the UW Ethno. Archives).

Contents (see photo-copies of tape box notes for detailed lists): 88-21.1 EC - Old Sunda I (formerly 61-1.1 OT) (Garfias inventory #290) 88-21.2 EC - Java (formerly 61-1.2 OT) (Garfias inventory #96) 88-21.3 EC - Java (formerly 61-1.3 OT) (Garfias inventory #138) 88-21.4 EC - Java (formerly 61-1.4 OT) (Garfias inventory #291) 88-21.5 EC - Java (formerly 61-1.5 OT) (Garfias inventory #293)

All EC reels in good condition (7/2006)

Related collections; 75-12.1-2 EC (OE5 Java) - same recorded material as on 88-21.4 EC 75-11.1-5 EC (OE7 Sunda) - material also appears to be from the Colin McPhee collection - duplicate material?
