Historical NoteReturn to Top

Kuphal and Leopold was a general mercantile store operating in Helena, Montana Territory, from 1886 to 1890. Owned by Frederick William Kuphal and Bernhart Leopold, the store sold groceries, wine, liquor, and cigars from its main store in the International Hotel building, and later from 103 South Main Street. Frederick William Kuphal was born in Germany on November 3, 1846. He arrived in Montana Territory in 1881. After his involvement in the mercantile venture with Leopold, he became partners with Frank J. Kenck in the Kuphal and Kenck Saloon. In 1900 Kuphal sold his interest and accepted a position with W. A. Clark in Butte, as a bookkeeper at the Colorado Mining and Smelting Company and the Colusa-Parrot Mining Company. Frederick W. Kuphal died on June 23, 1917, at the age of seventy-one.
