Donald W. Treadgold received his doctorate from Oxford University in 1950. He joined the University of Washington faculty in 1949, serving as a member of the Far Eastern and Russian Institute and later as chairman of the history department. Professionally, Treadgold was associated with the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies from 1963 to 1981.
