Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Sue Hamilton Cooper was born in Jackson, Michigan and came to Seattle in 1918 soon after receiving a B.A. degree from the Universtiy of Michigan. Her belief that women's organizations could provide the necessary power base to effect significant social welfare and educational betterment led her to active leadership in several organizations. She was one of the organizers of the annual Insitute of Government, a board member of the Municipal League and the League of Women Voters of Seattle (she belonged 1926-1960), helped to rewrite the City of Seattle charter and served as a King County freeholder in 1951. She was president of the Washington State Federation of Women's Clubs (to which she belonged 1944-1959). She was also a member of the American Association of the United Nations from 1945-1957, and a long time member of the University Baptist Church, and president of its Women's Society.
