Biographical NoteReturn to Top

oseph Frankel was cantor at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation beginning in 1949. He was a classroom teacher and director of education, Herzl Congregation, and the founder of Herzl Hebrew High School. Cantor Frankel taught full time in the Seattle School District and retired in 1981 as Assistant to the School District Personnel Director.

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Joseph Cohen and Meta Kaplan on 7 Feb 1978.

Cantor Frankel discusses his life and education in Germany prior to the World War II, discusses Buchenwald, immigrating to America, and his association with the Herzl congregation in Seattle. This tape is a good source of information about Herzl from 1941 until 1970.
