Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Edwin Hewitt was born in Everett, Washington, on January 20, 1920. He enrolled at Harvard University at the age of 16, and completed his PhD. when he was 22. After teaching at Harvard for six months, during World War II Hewitt was recruited to work at the Operations Research Station at the 8th Bomber Command in England, where he worked to calculate bomb trajectories and ways to defend bombers against Nazi planes. Hewitt then worked at Princeton, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Chicago before accepting a position as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Washington in 1948. He retired in 1988. Hewitt died on June 21, 1999.

Kenneth Ross was a former student of Hewitt and later a professor at the University of Rochester. He currently teaches mathematics at the University of Oregon. He worked with Hewitt on a well-known book.

Scope and Content: Monograph published in 1965 under the title "Real and abstract analysis; a modern treatment of the theory of functions of a real variable, by Edwin Hewitt and Karl Stromberg." Letter was written on February 18th, 1966 and concerns publishing details to Dr. Klaus Peters in Germany and Professor Karl B. Stromberg at the University of Oregon.

Scope and Content: Correspondence between Edwin Hewitt and Kenneth A. Ross. Ross was one of Hewitt's graduate students at the University of Washington, as well as a collaborator and co-author. Much of the correspondence relates to their professional collaborations. Also included is a photograph of Kurt Godel and Albert Einstein (with whom Hewitt was acquainted at Princeton), a photograph of the 1937 Harvard University swim team (of which Hewitt was a member with John F. Kennedy), and a sound cassette related to John von Neumann.
