Professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington.

Joost Alois Businger was born on March 29, 1924 in Haarlem, Netherlands. He earned his PhD from Utrecht University in 1954 on the topic of the turbulent transfer of heat, mass, and momentum in the atmospheric surface layer. After continuing his researcher at the Institute of Horticultural Engineering of Wageningen University, Businger began work as a research associate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956. Two years later, Businger moved to the University of Washington where he was eventually promoted to full professor in 1964. He retired from the University of Washington in 1983. Businger then began to work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research until his full retirement in 1989.

Businger was active with the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Committee, American Meteorological Society, Center for Climatic and Environmental Assessment, National Academy of Sciences, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Atmospheric Chemistry Panel, National Research Council, Atmospheric Sciences Committee, and the National Research Council.
