Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Katherine “Kathie” Barokas (22 October 1929 - ) was born to Avner “George” and Esther Alhadeff. Her father emigrated from Rhodes and her mother came from Turkey. Barokas’ uncles opened a fish company, Palace Fish and Oyster Company, for which her family worked for 50 years. When WWII broke out in 1941, Barokas started taking music lessons from Samuel Galdfarb while he was the music director for Temple De Hirsch. Barokas became a part of a singing group named the Victory Sextet. They performed at hospitals and Army and Navy events. Barokas eventually went on a world tour to Western Europe, Russia, and Israel. After the war, Barokas went to a business college, Griffin & Murphy, and later worked as a bank teller for 25 years. On 25 February 1951, Kathie married Morgan Barokas at Sephardic Bikur Holim. On 23 December 1953 they had their first child, Linda Louise. Three years later on 26 December 1956 they had Elaine. Barokas became a teacher at Temple De Hirsch and taught for 10 years. In addition, she would sing at different events around the city with her partner, Lucy Spring. Throughout her life, Barokas has been involved in various choirs and singing groups and continues to sing in the Temple De Hirsch adult choir.

Kathie Barokas and Jeanne Mayo were singing partners who performed for various meetings and events within the Jewish community as well as for non-affiliated groups.
