Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Stephen L. Sanger was born on March 24, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa. His childhood was spent on farms around the state until 1950, when he began high school in Iowa City. He enlisted in the Army in 1956, but only served for six months due to pneumonia and other related issues.

Following his graduation from the University of Iowa in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in history, Sanger moved to San Francisco, where he worked as a copy boy at the "San Francisco News-Call Bulletin." He also did graduate work in history and journalism at both San Francisco State College and the University of Iowa. Sanger worked for thirty years as a reporter at newspapers in Iowa, Ohio, California, Hawaii, and Washington state before his retirement from the "Seattle Post-Intelligencer" in 1988. After that time, he wrote freelance magazine articles as well as two books, "Hanford and the Bomb" and "Working on the Bomb."
