Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Elsie Ruth Deutsch Weiner was born in Seattle in 1920 to Julius and Eva Esfeld Deutsch. Eva emigrated from Poland with her family in 1909 and was prominent in the Seattle Jewish Community. Eva’s brother, Sol Esfeld, was also an important member of the Jewish and military communities of the Seattle area. Elsie graduated from Garfield High School in 1938 and from the University of Washington in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. She also attended the Art Institute of Chicago and St. Martin’s College. While working in her father’s Western Leather Works store in the early 1940s, Elsie met Harry I. Weiner, a major in the army. They were married on January 19, 1943. Harry became a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and an eye surgeon, and Elsie pursued oil painting. They settled in Aberdeen, Washington and adopted two sons, Jerald (Jerry) and Marc. Elsie was active in Seattle’s Jewish community. In the mid to late 1930s she taught Sunday School for Herzl Congregation and later became an active member of Temple Beth Israel in Aberdeen. Elsie was also active in the Northwest arts community. She was president of the Woman Painters of Washington in 1977 and exhibited her award-winning paintings in many local museums and galleries, as well as nationally. Elsie Deutsch Weiner died January 20th, 2005.
