Biographical NoteReturn to Top

H. Lowndes Maury was born on November 20, 1875 to Matthew F. and Lydia Ann Maury of Charlottesville, Virginia. After he finished high school in Charlottesville, Maury attended the University of Virginia from 1890 to 1894. He moved to Butte, Montana, immediately afterward and began work in a law office. Maury was a very active attorney for the remainder of his life and tried cases as high as the U.S. Supreme Court. During the latter part of World War II, Maury coordinated relief for the Soviet Union in Montana. He was involved in the Montana Democratic Party and advocated various liberal causes.

Maury married Anne Henderson Perkins who was born on December 4, 1875, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Perkins of Charlottesville, Virginia. Anne Perkins attended the Piedmont Female Institute in Charlottesville. Before her marriage to Maury on November 22, 1898, she taught piano and gave piano recitals with her sister. Anne Maury was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and its Guild, the Woman's Club and Music Club of Butte, organizing children's groups for the Red Cross during World Waw I, the Parent-Teacher Association, and the Homer Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Maury had seven children, Reuben, George, Jesse, Josephine, Lydia, Elizabeth, and H. Lowndes Maury, Jr.

H. Lowndes Maury died on January 14, 1959 and Anne Maury died on October 11, 1966.
