The Department of Family Medicine was established in 1971 and resides within the University of Washington's School of Medicine. The department is concerned with the education and training of physicians who will apply the knowledge and skills of family medicine and other medical disciplines in family practice. Through the UW Affiliated Family Practice Residency Network and 15 affiliated residency programs, the department offers residents training in a variety of practice options, including rural practice, urban underserved practice, and academic careers throughout the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).

Biographical/Historical Note: The Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program is administered out of the Dept. of Family Medicine. This is a regional program serving states participating in the WAMI medical education program. Funding and administrative support of R/UOP is a collaborative effort of the region's five AHECs (Area Health Education Centers), the Washington Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, the academies of family physicians in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, the UW Dept. of Family Medicine, the University of Idaho, the University of Alaska, and Washington State University.

Biographical/Historical Note: Clinical Services within the Department of Family Medicine include ambulatory care services at the Family Medical Center (FMC) and Harborview Medical Center, and the Family Medicine Inpatient Services at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview.

The Family Medical Center (FMC) provides health care for individuals and families. Services include general and preventive health care of women, men, infants, children and adolescents, as well as pregnancy care and deliveries. Individual providers have specific expertise as well in women's health care, geriatric care, adolescent health care, obstetrics, sports medicine, behavioral health, nutrition, and diabetes care. Additional services include coloscopy and cryotherapy, sigmoidoscopy, vasectomy, minor surgeries, on-site psychotherapy and counseling, on-site nutritional assessment and counseling, anticoagulation monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and pharmacology consultations by specially trained providers in the clinic. Family Practice residents provide comprehensive care to patients and their families under the supervision of faculty attending physicians.

Biographical/Historical Note: The WWAMI Rural Health Research Center is one of six rural research centers funded by the federal Office of Rural Health Policy to perform policy-oriented research on issues related to rural health care. The WWAMI RHRC was established in 1988 within the Department of Family Medicine's Research section and works closely with the Programs for Healthy Communities, the Washington State Department of Health, and Area Health Education Centers in the five WWAMI states. The center focuses on the training and supply of rural health care providers and the content and outcomes of the care they provide; the availability and quality of care for rural women and children, including obstetric and perinatal care; and access to high-quality care for vulnerable and minority rural populations.

Scope and Content: Correspondence; 1994-1999.

The majority of these files document the administration of Roger A. Rosenblatt while serving as Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Family Medicine's Research Section from 1994 to 1997. Also includes files created during the tenures of L. Gary Hart while serving as Director of WWAMI's Rural Health Research Center from 1994 to 1999 and Jeanne L. Hansen while serving as Program Coordinator for the Dept. of Family Medicine's Research Section from 1994 to 1996.
