Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Researcher, professor of biological structure and administrator, University of Washington.

A member of the original faculty of the School of Medicine, Richard J. Blandau became an associate professor of anatomy at the University of Washington in 1949. He later served as an assistant dean of the medical school from 1955 to 1960 and as associate dean from 1960 to 1964. While at the university, Dr. Blandau engaged in basic studies on ovulation, fertilization and embryonic development that led to advances in human fertility. He pioneered time-lapse photography of mammal ovulation and he produced 14 teaching and research films, one of which earned a 1959 Vienna Film Festival award. He died on May 11, 1998 in Seattle.
