Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The J. William T. Youngs papers consists of research collected by Dr. J. William T. Youngs for his book The Fair and the Falls, drafts of his book, and oral histories conducted by Dr. Youngs and his students for his book. The Fair and the Falls looks at the history of Spokane, Washington and the way the city was impacted by hosting the 1974 World's Fair, Expo '74. Series One consists of research and drafts collected during the process of writing The Fair and the Falls. Many of these files contain photocopies of documents dating back to the history of Spokane dating back to the late-19th century. Series One is broken into five subseries: Subseries One consists of early research and drafts from The Fair and the Falls. Subseries Two consists of second-level additions to the book, including both new research and new book drafts. Subseries Three consists of further additions. Subseries Four consists of work logs and interview notes for Dr. Youngs's student workers. Subseries Five consists of Expo '74 memorabilia collected by Dr. Youngs, including an Expo '74 flag and an Expo '74 special edition of The Spokesman-Review. Series Two consists of oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Youngs and his students for The Fall and the Falls. Series Two is broken into two subseries: Subseries One consists of tape recordings of oral history interviews on the history of Spokane and Expo '74. Subseries Two consists of transcripts of the taped interviews.

Many of the files containing undated information are dated "circa 1995" as they were compiled near the publication date of The Fair and the Falls. Many of these files contain photocopies of works created much earlier than 1995.
