Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ernest Newsted (1909-2001) was born in Eureka, California and moved to Washington State, where he graduated from high school. In 1929, Newsted and Lenore Kaas were married. He was active in the Shriners, Masons, and with the International Executive Service Corps.

Newsted raised dairy cattle before beginning a career in logging on the Olympic Peninsula. In the mid-1950s, he became a logging superintendent with Brooks-Scanlon in Bend, Oregon. In his role, he managed logging operations, including evaluating the quality of timber, creating tree harvesting plans, and researching logging equipment purchases.

The Ernest Newsted Papers consists of materials assembled by Newsted, primarily documenting his years as a logging manager at Brooks-Scanlon in the 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes timber sale auction announcements, maps, correspondence, memos, blueprints, equipment brochures, photographs and drawings. Monthly operating reports from Newsted’s time at Blue Mountain Mills are also included.

The photographs include snapshots of logging operations and equipment. Maps in the collection are related to timber sales and road construction, mainly in areas within the Deschutes National Forest.

The Ernest Newsted Collection includes 108 maps, 111 photographs and 22 negatives. Many of the maps are fragile and several photographs are damaged.

Acquisition Information

The Ernest Newsted Papers were transfered to the Special Collections and Archives Research Center in 2016 by the Oregon State University College of Forestry.

Processing Note

Several of the maps were encapsulated at the time this finding was prepared in 2017.   There are about 35 additional maps in the collection that would benefit from encapsulation.  The folders that include these items are noted on a list in the central file.
