Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Lorenzo Lorain was born in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania on August 5, 1831. In 1852, Lorain entered West Point Military Academy and graduated in July 1856. Lorain served as second lieutenant at Fort Walla Walla from 1856-1857 before being transferred to Fort Umpqua, located below the southern boundary of the Siletz/Coast Reservation. In March 1861, Lorain was injured during the Battle of Blackburn's Ford. From 1862-1870, he served as Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at West Point. In 1875, Lorain became an engineering instructor at Fort Monroe where he developed the Lorain telescopic sight and established a photography department. Lorain died on March 6, 1882 in Baltimore, Maryland.
