Scope and Content: Tape recorded panel session, 13 Nov 1989, and transcript.

Panel on discrimination led by Paul Burstein, Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington and Leatrice Kraft for the Jewish Archives Project. Participants are Merle Cohn, Albert Franco, Melville Oseran and Judge Solie M. Ringold. The four participants are attorneys who were active in the Anti-Defamation League in Seattle after WWII through the 1980s. They describe the difficulties that Jewish attorneys faced in finding employment after graduation from Law School in the 1930s and 1940s. They discuss the changes that were brought about through the Fair Employment Practices Act which they were instrumental in bringing about in the state of Washington. The discussion covers restrictions in residential neighborhoods and private social clubs and how this has changed. They relate some of their own experiences in applying for membership in clubs and how the Glendale Golf Club has become predominantly non-Jewish. They relate the reasons for the move of the Jewish Community Center to Mercer Island and the movement of the Orthodox Jews to Seward Park.
