Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States (1929–1933). He was a professional mining engineer and achieved American and international prominence in humanitarian relief efforts in war-torn Belgium while serving as head of the U.S. Food Administration during World War I. As the United States Secretary of Commerce in the 1920s under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, he promoted partnerships between government and business under the rubric "economic modernization." In the presidential election of 1928, Hoover easily won the Republican nomination despite having no elected-office experience. When the Wall Street Crash of 1929 struck less than eight months after he took office, Hoover tried to combat the ensuing Great Depression with government enforced efforts, public works projects such as the Hoover Dam, tariffs such as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, an increase in the top tax bracket from 25% to 63% and increases in corporate taxes. These initiatives did not produce economic recovery during his term, but served as the groundwork for various policies incorporated in Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.

Lou Henry Hoover (March 29, 1874 – January 7, 1944)Return to Top

Lou Henry Hoover was the wife of President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, and served as First Lady from 1929 to 1933. She oversaw construction of the presidential retreat at Rapidan Camp in Madison County,Virginia, a precursor of the current presidential retreat, Camp David. She was the first First Lady to make regular nationwide radio broadcasts to the American public. Mrs. Hoover was well-versed in Latin; she collaborated with her husband in translating Agricola's De Re Metallica, a 16th-century encyclopedia of mining and metallurgy. The Hoover translation was published in 1912 and remains in print today as the standard English translation. During World War I, she assisted her husband in providing relief for Belgian refugees; she was decorated in 1919 by King Albert I of Belgium for her work. She served as the national president of the Girl Scouts of the USA from 1922 to 1925 while Hoover served in the cabinet of Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. She served as president again after leaving the White House, from 1935 to 1937.
