Historical NoteReturn to Top

Lillian Strong who was born to Fanny and Augustus Smith in Kansas City, Missouri on April 14, 1898. The Lillian moved to northeast Washington in 1910 to live with her uncle Charles Willis, who cared for her after the death of Smith's parents. Smith attended the Hamilton School and North Central High School before marrying Joseph W. Strong, an active member of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, in 1920. Lillian became a home maker during marraige and raised three children, Lewis, Charlotte, and Robert. Lillian Strong died on August 28, 1994.

This collection contains an interview with Lillian Strong (Mrs. Joseph W. Strong). In the interview, Mrs. Strong discusses her experiences as an African American woman living in Spokane since 1910. Topics discussed include housing, religion, discrimination in the workplace, education in Spokane, and black-owned businesses. The interview was conducted by Dr. Joseph Franklin.
