Biographical NoteReturn to Top

In the early 1940s, Earl Miller began his association with Snow Basin as a ski instructor. In the mid-1950s, with the departure of Corey Engen, Miller became the ski school director. Earl, and his wife Gladdis, operated the ski school until their retirement in 1987.

The Millers owned the U.S. Forest Service concession permit for the ski school separate from the lift operations permit. This is somewhat unique in that only one other ski school in Utah was operated in such a manner. Today resort owners hold all ski school concession permits.

Earl Miller was also extensively involved in competitive skiing in the Ogden area (i.e. coaching, course-setting, etc.). He was an examiner and officer for the Professional Ski Instructors of America-Intermountain. (PSIA-I). In ski teaching circles, he was known as a great technician.

Gladys Miller, Earl's wife and ski companion, was honored in 2004 at the Ski Archives Annual Banquet for her contributions to Ski History. There are eleven images of Gladys, Earl, and their work. Miller was inducted into the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame in 2005.
