Accession No. 2756-001: Morris Halpern papers, 1977Return to Top

1 sound (c60) cassette and 1 vertical file

Scope and Content: Recorded interview covering the years 1905-1919 conducted by Meta Buttnick Kaplan, 10/17/1977, obituary of Gedaliah Halpern, and addendum to interview (1p.).

Morris tells of the lack of money in their home due to the financial difficulties of the struggling Congregation Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath for which his father was elected first official Rabbi in 1905. Rabbi Halpern served the Congragation until 1919. Then he returned to a pulpit in Mount Vernon, New York, where he had served before coming to Seattle. Morris describes Zalman Grodsinsky who built the first Mikvah and Goldie Shucklin who founded the Hebrew Ladies Montefior Society and was the prime mover in building the all-city Jewish Chapel at 12th and Spruce. Morris's story gives a good picture of life around the Shul where the orthodox Jews lived. The Shul was at 13th and Washington. The chedar and the Mikvah were close by. The observant Jews lived within walking distance of the Shul. This was how Jewish needs were met in the new land.
