Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Stereoscopic imaging is a technique that creates the illusion of depth using two 2-D images placed side by side; one in front of the left eye and one in front of the right eye of the viewer. Both offset 2-D images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. Three strategies have been used to produce this effect: the viewer wears eyeglasses to combine separate images from two offset sources, the viewer wears eyeglasses to filter offset images from a single source separated to each eye, or the light source splits the images directionally into the viewer's eyes without glasses.

French Tissue StereocardsReturn to Top

French tissue stereocard techniques were developed by J.L. Tardieu in 1853. Tissue stereocards consist of a print on translucent paper mounted on a card cut to frame the print and often with a tissue added . The image could be tinted and the tint visible when lit from behind as a transparency. The tissue format of stereocards were available commercially by 1855. The largest amount of tissue stereocards were produced between 1858 and 1875. Many tissue stereocard producers are still unidentified. Many are marked only by initials such as these which are marked B.K. Photos and J.M.

Stereoscopic Gems of American and Foreign Scenery
Stereoscopic Gems was a small, pirate company that issued views of American and Foreign Scenery in the 1880’s and 90’s. Their home office location is unknown. Most of the photos tend to be of low quality, while the mounts are of good, thick stock. Their views were sold by agents only. May be the same company as Stereoscopic Gems above.
